Telling It children and their UM
student mentors celebrate a
semester of hard work.

Telling It

A unique collaboration between SOS and the University of Michigan, Telling It uses the creative arts as a springboard to promote literacy for homeless children.

The program offers both an after-school opportunity for homeless children and an educational experience for college students rooted in community service. For 10 weeks, elementary-school children, ages 7-10, who live in area shelters gather weekly with University of Michigan students and use dance, poetry, visual arts and drama to create their own stories.

Telling It was founded by local artist Deborah Gordon-Gurfinkel, who was motivated to create the program after volunteering with homeless youth.
