CHS Volunteers Enjoy Time at SOS

Friday, December 09, 2011

On most days the CHS Group volunteers can be found at the food pantry breaking down boxes, re-stocking shelves, or packing food bags. For the past month the volunteers have donated their time to help those in their community who need food.

The CHS group is a company that focuses on supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, traumatic head injuries, mental illnesses and other mobility issues. Amanda Hedges, CHS staff member, oversees the individuals from CHS who volunteer at SOS.

“We help them at volunteer sites or at enclave sites and we just show them basic things,” explains Hedges.

Hedges sees how the skills the group learns at SOS helps them in their daily lives. “At their home we usually have to prepare meals or go grocery shopping; they have a little bit of problem with it,” says Hedges. “And here they can figure out what all goes into a grocery bag so when they go out with their staff at home, they’re like ‘oh, well at SOS volunteer site we pack vegetables and fruits.’”

The volunteers are extremely enthusiastic and dedicated to SOS. The group originally volunteered at SOS only once a week, but due to the rising interest they now come four times a week.

“They’ll go back to the office and tell everyone what they did for today and now everyone wants a turn to go.”

**On behalf of SOS, special thanks to the volunteers from CHS. Because of you, SOS can continue to meet the needs of the community.**
