Employment Services
SOS Community Services provides employability support to families who are homeless and residing in Washtenaw County homeless
family shelters. Some families may have moved to permanent housing
and be receiving follow-up services from the shelters. Because homeless
families experience multiple and complex barriers to stability,
the families must be engaged in case management services through
a family shelter program in order to receive services in this program.
Employability support includes:
- Assessment -- including education and employment history, strengths,
barriers and education and employment goals
- Case Coordination -- including developing individualized employability
action plans, creating connections to community education and
employment providers, participating in the emergency shelter case
management teams, and monitoring participant progress.
- Money Management Skill Building -- including a structured training
and support group designed to assist participants in budgeting
for work-related expenses and increase their ability to plan for
unexpected expenses that may cause work-related problems or termination.
- Job Readiness Skill Building -- including a biannual, two-week
intensive course and one-on-one instruction through the year on
the correct way to fill out applications, post resumes on-line
and document work history. They also receive instruction on interviewing
skills, conflict resolution, work attitude, work ethic and communication
skills. By working on these skills, participants increase their
capacity to utilize the Michigan Works! One-Stop Services Center.
- Direct Financial Assistance -- including payment of employment-related
expenses (e.g., work clothes, uniforms, licensing, books, school
supplies, and tutoring), job readiness training, GED and literacy
training, and driver education courses. Financial assistance is based on funding availability.
Is transportation and child care provided?
This project includes childcare and round-trip van transportation
from shelters to the program site for participants engaged in Skill
Building workshops. It also provides bus tokens, cab vouchers, gas
vouchers, vehicle repair, driver's licensing fees, driver education,
and childcare for families engaging in education and employment
related activities and income maintenance and orientation activities
through FIA and Michigan Works orientations.
