FOOD DISTRIBUTION COUNSELORS:  Provide crisis intervention and emotional support to families requesting emergency food assistance. Perform assessments, help people gain access to resources by providing information & referrals, and pack and distribute food bags.

Location: SOS Housing Crisis Center, 114 N. River Street, Ypsilanti (Depot Town).
Shifts: Tuesdays, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and/or Wednesdays, 6 - 8 p.m.
Training: Required, intensive crisis training provided, followed by brief on-duty mentoring period.
Commitment: Approximately one shift per week. Minimum 6-month post-training volunteer commitment expected.

CRISIS COUNSELORS:  Work with staff to assist families facing housing emergencies obtain financial and emotional support and access to resources. Assist with eviction prevention, location of emergency shelter and affordable housing, utility assistance, and many other issues.

Location: SOS Housing Crisis Center, 114 N. River Street, Ypsilanti (Depot Town).
Shifts: Minimum of one 2 - 4 hour shift per week, during regular hours of operation: weekdays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. with extended hours on Wednesdays, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Training: Required, intensive crisis training and mentoring provided plus a brief, post-training, on-duty mentoring period.
Commitment: Minimum one shift of 2 - 4 hours per week for no less than 6 months, or 25 shifts post-training.

TIME FOR TOTS CHILD CARE VOLUNTEERS:  Implement and facilitate children's activities and supply nurturing and emotional support to homeless children at our Time for Tots day-care center.

Location: Ann Arbor, within walking distance of UM's central campus.
Shifts: 2 - 3 hours per week, during regular hours of operation: Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Training: One 1-hour interview/orientation and one 2-hour training session. Must complete a police background check and show proof of recent negative TB test.
Commitment: 2 - 3 hours per week for a minimum of 4 months post-training.

AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORS: Help with homework, read, write, play academic games and use the computer with homeless school-age children. Provide feedback to staff.

Location: Tutors meet with students in group sessions.
Shifts: Minimum one tutoring session per week.
Training: One 1-hour interview and one 3-hour training session. Must complete a police background check.
Commitment: 2 - 4 hours per week for a minimum of 4 months.

SUNNY DAYS SUMMER PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS: Work at a summer enrichment program for homeless children ages 6-12. Provide direct care and support to children. Provide emotional support, facilitate age-appropriate, culturally sensitive activities, help chaperone field trips, perform other duties to keep program running smoothly. Location, dates, times, and volunteer orientation/training are TBA. On-site staff support over course of program.

TRANSPORTATION VOLUNTEERS: Help ensure a smooth ride by assisting in transport of young homeless children to/from Time for Tots child care facility in Ann Arbor. Assist driver by helping to buckle in kids, soothe or feed babies, or whatever is needed for safe, comfortable ride.

Location: Variable; home base is Time for Tots.
Approximate Shifts: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday AND/OR Thursday, 7:50 - 9:00 a.m. OR 2:30 - 4:00 p.m.
Training: On-the-job supervision by staff driver.

SPECIAL EVENTS VOLUNTEERS: Work with staff to plan, organize, and run special events.  Assist with publicity, participant recruitment, soliciting sponsorships & donations, decoration & set-up, registration, food, clean-up, etc. Help make events fun for participants while helping us bring in the funds necessary to support our services.

Location and Shifts: Variable.
Training: Provided as needed.
Commitment: Variable.

DONATION DRIVE VOLUNTEERS: Work on your own or with friends, family or co-workers to plan, organize, and implement a donation drive. Collect items for donation from the community, including non-perishable foods, personal needs items, gift certificates, furniture, housewares, infant & children's items, and/or office supplies.

Location and Shifts: Variable.
Training: No experience is necessary. Great opportunity for children and adults alike. Contact Brenda Baylis, Family Services Worker, at 734.484.9905 or brendab@soscs.org for a brief orientation on SOS donation procedures and our current needs. Staff is available to support your efforts.

FUND-RAISING DRIVE VOLUNTEERS: Work on your own or with others to plan, organize, and implement a fund-raising drive. Help collect monetary donations to support SOS services for homeless families and children.

Location and Shifts: Variable.
Training: No experience is necessary. Great opportunity for children and adults. Contact Nancy Shore, at 734.961.1204 or your@email.address for a brief orientation on SOS donation procedures. Staff is available to help you think through your fund-raising goals and strategies and support your efforts.
Commitment: Self-defined.

GRANTS/RESEARCH VOLUNTEERS: Work with staff to research grant opportunities, identify grant-making organizations whose mission and interests match those of SOS.

Location and Shifts: Variable.
Training: Previous research experience helpful, but not necessary. Orientation and training provided as needed.
Commitment: Variable, though regular help is needed.

OFFICE VOLUNTEERS: Help out regularly or from time to time with office work. Filing, faxing, inventorying and organizing supplies, shredding and other administrative tasks as they might arise.

Location and Shifts: Variable.
Training: Previous office work experience helpful, but not necessary. Orientation and training provided by staff on project to project basis.
Commitment: Variable, though regular help is needed.
