Volunteer with SOS!

Community volunteers play a central role at SOS. Volunteerism is one of our core values, and we are rooted in a history of voluntary service and community involvement.

Every day, volunteers at SOS provide counseling, advocacy, referrals, and direct help to homeless families in our community.

Volunteers distribute food from our emergency pantry, tend to the girls & boys in our children's programs, and help mothers & fathers strengthen their parenting skills.

Volunteers also staff SOS fundraising events, stuff mailings, organize donation drives, and do myriad other tasks to keep operations running smoothly.

SOS is run by an all-volunteer board of directors.

In short, SOS depends upon volunteers from the community!

Volunteering Basics

WHO: SOS needs volunteers who are nonjudgmental, caring, willing to learn, dependable, committed, able to work with diverse populations, and interested in making a positive difference in the lives of homeless families and children in Washtenaw County. Usually, volunteers must be at least 18 years old. No experience is necessary! Training is provided!

WHAT: Volunteers are needed in various roles for housing crisis services, homeless children's services, special events, fundraising and donation drives, and office work.

WHEN: Times and dates vary, depending on the volunteer role. Most direct work with consumers requires volunteers to be available during weekday/daytime hours. Take a look at our training calendar to see when you can get started.

WHERE: Volunteers work from one of four SOS sites in Ypsilanti or Ann Arbor. In some cases--such as donation drives--volunteers can work from home. Special events take place at various sites throughout the community.

WHY: Each person will have his/her own reason for volunteering. From past and current volunteers, we've heard about all kinds of motivating factors. Some of them include:

  • Wanting to make a positive impact for the community
  • Desire to fulfill religious or ethical obligations
  • Looking to meet and work with caring, committed people
  • Commitment to support a cause I really care about
  • To do something different that would be FUN!
  • Wanting to build new skills and strengthen my resume

You may share one of these reasons or have one or more of your own!

HOW: It's easy. Just contact Donna Vigilant ( volunteer@soscs.org ), our Volunteer Services Coordinator, and she'll help you find the right role for yourself and get you started with learning the ropes! You can either call Donna at 734.961.1210, or send her an e-mail. Or, you can fill out our on-line volunteer form, and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
